Turning Interest Into Action
Over the summer after an eye exam, I realized how much of a privilege it is to have your eyesight. With your sight, you can appreciate nature around you, perform better in school, and have a better quality of life. Unfortunately, not everyone is blessed with adequate vision; and for those in developing countries, accessing eye treatment is a difficult task. Oftentimes we see an issue and do nothing to resolve it. In reality, until someone steps up to the plate and helps, the situation is only being exacerbated. I myself have done this, and in the turbulent year of 2020, I decided to no longer sit on the sidelines, but to get in the game and make a difference. As Maya Angelou eloquently stated, “As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands, one for helping yourself, the other for helping others.” With this quote in my mind, I decided to start a program called “See my Vision.” Through See My Vision, I will visit developing countries, the first being Jamaica, with an ophthalmologist to distribute eyeglasses to my goal of 1,000 children and adults in need.
